Update

Hi all,

Haven't posted in a while and thought I would give a quick update on what's coming up for the portal.

Just posted a new article on getting top dollar when selling your home. We will be posting information for those interested in writing an article and having it posted on the portal.

Also, I'm hoping to get to the directory this month and get it up and working. What the entries will look like is really the hold up here. Input from the community would be appreciated here.

ByteDriven Law

You may have noticed the tab on the main navigation entitled ByteDriven Law. This is where you will be able to check out the Case Management software and tools that are being developed. Look for this area to open up soon. I'll keep you posted on that.

More later,

New feature for care submission forms

All,

The submission forms that are being placed throughout the site will now disable and disply a message to the user on submit. The information that the user submitted will still be displayed in all forms, however, the fields will be disabled. This allows the user to see what they have submitted and also let's them know that the form did indeed go through. Another added benefit is that it will help cut down on multiple accidental submissions by our visitors.

More soon,

New Lawyer matching service

Hi all,

Here's what's new :

1. New attorney matching service.
As a new service to our visitors, Law Office Portal is now offering an attorney matching service. You may have noticed the forms in various places around the portal. These forms allow visitors to the site to enter their contact information and a brief description of why they believe they need legal assistance. Law Office Portal will attempt to get the submitted information to a qualified attorney in the appropriate region and practice area.

2. Updates to the Legal Resource Page.
The Resource Center area of Law Office Portal is a great place for our visitors to start their search of the portal for the information and resources they are looking for. Links and pointers to different areas of the site are being added to the Resource Center to make it easier for users to find their way around. As frequent users of the portal know, new areas of the portal are added often. As the portal grows in size, the Resource Center will become more and more important to our users. Any ideas on addition information you believe should be added to the resource page, please email me at : mark@lawofficeportal.com

3. Traffic
Traffic to the site continues to grow at a rapid pace as the site gains in popularity. Please help us improve the user experience of the portal by participating in the forums, linking to the site and spreading the word!

More soon,

Legal Directory Update

All,

You may have noticed that the Legal Directory looks different. The old directory was setup to allow for full profiles, much like mini websites. However, the new directory will have paired down listings that will be offered to attorneys for a nominal fee. The proceeds will help support additional development for the site.

That's all for now.

Thanks!
Mark

Legal Directory

All,

The Legal Directory now has the directory site, http://www.lawyerlocalsearch.com embedded. This is an older site that has been around a while that allows users to enter their information into a form and have it sent to attorneys.

The Lawyer Local Search site will be converted to support attorney listings. Attorneys may then add their listings from the Legal Directory area of LOP or directly on the site itself.

Thanks,
Mark

Case Management Software

All,

You may have noticed a new tab has shown up in the navigation menu. This tab is where you will find information on the Case and Office management software. You have already seen pieces of the software in the marketing and SEO tools. It might be a while before we enable the tab. Of course, I'll be sure to post it when we do.

Work has started on the conversion of the directory. We've decided to convert the directory to paid inclusion and allow those who wish to have their firm information included to do so. The hope was that more participation from the users would help support the portals directory. However, sadly, we haven't been getting the postings, links and sponsor support we hoped for. Therefore, we need to look for alternate ways to support continued development of goodies for our users.

Lastly, on a more positive note, LOP continues to increase the traffic to the site. We are on track to log over 1,300 visits this month. Last month we had 1,006 visits. Thank you!

Thanks to all those who continue to visit the portal.

Moving Stuff Around

All,

You may have noticed that some things have moved around on the site. We're trying to get the site prep'd for some additional directories that we will be adding to the site soon.

The My Office Portal area of the site is also changing. This is where user will go to change preferences and add customization.

Additionally, another round of development will be done on the directory. The lawyer directory will become more of a resource/link are than full featured profiles.

More soon. Thanks!

Also, I added the main tabs to each article page for more navigation options. I'll be adding a box with suggested readings and maybe add/remove some things from the sidebar.

Legal Practice Software

All,

Promised updates to the Law Office Portal are coming soon. They have been a little slow to make it online due to work on a new legal practice application. This application will have features such as case management, contact lists, scheduling, etc. We hope to introduce the first modules in the not too distant future.

Last month we had 925 visits to the site. The traffic is steadily increasing each month. Users and their support for our sponsors and add selection is how we keep the site free. So spread the word, add links to your sites, and visit often!

Some simple pages have been developed for the law school directory. They should be added to the site tomorrow.

More updates soon!

BackTest function in the tools section

All,

The directories should be fixed in short order.

The development team received a question on the BackTest function that will be added to the law office tools area of the site.

The BackTest function is designed to help the user try 'what if' scenarios. A user may adjust the per cent allocated to a particular marketing category and see how it may have impacted the number of potential clients.

The user runs through the various scenarios and adjusts the percentages until they are satisfied with the allocations. These percentages may then be applied to future marketing decisions and hopefully provide a higher return for their legal marketing dollars.

As always, we welcome your questions. At some point we will compile the answers into a page of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the site.

Update to site look and feel

All,

Attorney Directory:
The new count for the attorney listing directory isn't working properly(off by one). This should be fixed in the next update. Also, it looks like some of the 'bread crumb' menu links in the attorney directory sometimes will give a page not found error. This should be addressed soon as well. Finally, the remaining listing count will be implemented for the lawyer listings before work on the Law Student directory begins.

Website styles:
Some changes were made to the web site's look & feel. Content was often contained(especially on the front page) in a colored box. The color of the box was a dark blue to match the sites menu bar. However, some users found the content difficult to read. So, we changed it! Let us know what you think.

Updates for Lawyer Directory

All,

Finally had some time to update more Attorney Directory features.

Users may now access the Attorney Profile creation area without logging in. Of course, users will not be able to log in and update information due to listings no longer being associated with a login. We will be adding this ability to registered users later. Perhaps this functionality will only be available to premium members. This is of yet undecided.

In addition to the creation access, the county profile page will now show a listings count. Currently we have counts for the initial practice area listing screen. If you select a practice area, you will navigate to the State listings page for that practice area. These listings do not have counts next to the names. However, if you select a State you will navigate to county listing for that State and Practice which now have listing counts next to the name. The count for the State listing page will be added soon. Please test it out and send feedback to developers@lawofficeportal.com or post in the forums.

Fixed Forum / Opening up Attorney Directory

All,

The bug that crashed the forums after I implemented the new security feature has been fixed. The forums are now open and available for use.

The Lawyer and Law Firm directory is now for Attorneys only. We are in the process of opening up the directory for submissions without having to log in. There will be limited fields available for this open submission. It should be ported over in the next day or two.

That's all for now!

Forums re-opened...for now

All,

We added yet another anti-bot update to the forum registration. We're hoping this will help keep the spamming by bots down to a minimum.

Anyway, the Mass Torts and General forums are now open again. We had to delete all 216 users because we couldn't really tell what was a bot and not. Anyway, we're going to see how this works.

The Law School listings will be going up in the next week. We will also be finishing off the listing support for the Lawyer and Law Firm directory.

Mark - LOP Principal Engineer

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

New Lawyer / Law Firm Listing Count

All,

The Lawyer / Law Firm directory now has a listing count next to the practice area links.

For example; Administrative Law(5).

The '5' indicates that there are 5 listings in the area of administrative Law within the directory. An individual listing may actually be under multiple practice areas(depending on the practice areas selected in the listing creation).

Under each practice area the listings are broken up by states. We will be adding counts to the state links soon. Of course, under the state there are county links which hold the actual listings. We will be adding counts to those links as well.

There will be a slight change to the listings. In order to open up the directory to as many individuals as possible the listing creation page will be limited to basic information. This basic listing can be submitted by anyone without logging in. However, the listing will not show up in the directory listings until the link has been verified by a LOP editor. This will help us keep the directories as clean as possible.

There will not be a link or fee for these basic lisings. However, we will encourage users provide links to the Law Office Portal as a courtesy. Once we get the directories working well, LOP will offer those who wish premium listings. More on this later.

Directory Listings now available What's next?

All,

The lawyer profile directory is now active. The listings that are returned are not quite what they will be yet, but they're on their way to getting there. Initially, there will be one active profile per account. The listings will provide the basic information entered when the profile was created. There is still some work to do on the profile display and listings, check back for improvements.

Next on the list will be to finish off the listings and start work on the next directory which will be for law students. Once the directory is complete for law students there will be a third directory for vendors and legal related marketing firms.

In addition to continued work on the profile directories we will be adding a small resource directory for law schools. So check back in the near future for new stuff.

As always, we are working on additional content, resources, and tools to add value for our portal users.

Do you have an idea for a tool? Let us know!

Legal Directory Update

All,

The directory is almost there. Just working out a couple of glitches and it will be opened up to submissions.

The first release will allow for some simple listings and profile pages. As requested, we are considering offering a premium listing profile that will allow for more feature. There hasn't been a decision on that one yet.

Once we open up the first directory(attorneys), we'll post here on what's next on the agenda.

Legal Profiles

All,

Work has resumed on the profiles and will be released soon. In order to get profiles support up as soon as possible we will be releasing a very basic version. We will follow up afterwards with more functionality.

Thanks!
Mark - LOP Principal Engineer

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

All,

The attorney profiles should be posted to the public sometime this week. The first release will be a very basic profile. The plan is to increase the features in later versions.

The process for creating a profile will be :
1. Create a free account with Law Office Portal by registering
2. Go to the directory tab and select create/edit profile (you will need to be logged in to do this)
3. Fill out the simple form
4. Submit the form

Once you have done this your profile will be reviewed by someone at Law Office Portal. This is really just to make sure that it's not spam. Once it is approved it will show up in the directory

After your profile is in the directory you may edit your profile by logging in and using the edit functionality. Your changes will be reviewed and approved through the same process as when you originally created your attorney profile.

One the attorney profile is working the next step in directory support will be for the Law Student area. After that we will add support for the Legal Marketing and Vendor areas.

Look for the new profiles soon!

Thanks,

Mark - LOP Principal Engineer

Forum updates and Law Student Content

All,

Today I made a couple of modifications to the General forum and opened up access again to the public. I removed access to the member list in hope this will cut down on some of the sapm-bots that have been visiting our forum. So far we have;

- removed the member list to the law office portal forum
- added graphic based verification code on registration
- added email verification
- blocked known Russian domain that was porn-bot'in us

This probably wont stop the spamming. But I hope it will at least slow it down a little

Law Student Content Area:

The latest article post on Study Tips for Law Students has been posted on the main site. In addition, it is also available on the Law Student content tab. This is where article related directly to law students will be posted along with other useful information. As we get more articles posted to the site we will archive off older postings. These will remain available on the articles and law student content areas.

Thanks!

Legal Directory Progress

All,

I started looking at the legal profile area of LOP again today. Althoug slight modifications was made to the county listing page, the directory hasn't really been updated as of yet.

Now that we have the VERY basics of the the basic & basic with charts reports working(minimum), the profiles directory is due for a quick cycle of development.

For this next round of development for the directory the goal will be to get a basic profile entry form as well as listings support on the directory screens. This will allow users to start entering the profiles and get them up and listed on the site.

Future enhancements to the directory will be search and networking.

New Market Summary Report with Charts

All,

A second report has been posted to the Marketing Tool. This one is a lot like the Basic Marketing report only wit the addition of charts.

The first release is limited to the Leads by Category Pie graph in 2D. The next release will allow you to insert one or more graphics. Eventually, the plan is to provide a couple of 'templates' to choose from with alternate locations for the data tables and charts. The future reports will also allow the user to insert custom text to personalize the reports.

We hope that you find the Marketing Tools and other Law Office Portal features useful and help spread the word to others.

Updated Basic report and new directory for law students

All,

Just posted up a new Basic Report. The basic marketing report will now display all entries, summary of items by category, and totals.

It's still all text and the only option is to have the report generate a PDF in a new window. The other types supported will be RTF, TEXT, and HTML. A friend, Big Dan, suggested excel, so maybe we'll add that as well.

In addition to the report setup options, we will be adding the import function soon. It will allow the user to upload a file with multiple marketing entries and they will be loaded into the tool. We haven't decided on the file format or the maximum number yet. But size shouldn't be limited too bad. Remember, the tool will 'page' results using next/prev when you hit over 10 items. And yes, at some point registered users will be able to save some number of entries in the database.

In addition to adding the extended report(added summary tables today), we've added the initial links for what will be the Law Student directory.

I've been asked about the expected release of the profiles. I think we should have time to add an initial profile some time in the next week or so.

Well, that's it for today. Next to be release will most likely be a new article on tips for the Law Student and more directory links. I hope to get the profile up soon so that we can start getting those profiles up!

Finally, an update on site traffic. We increased unique traffic over 300% last month and it looks like we should hit about 200% this month. Of course, it's easy when you start from a very low number! Anyway, help support the site and add a link to LOP from your own site. This will increase the traffic and visability of your profile.

First Legal Report Posted - Basic Marketing Report

All,

The first law office marketing report was posted last night. The Basic Marketing Report will generate a PDF in a new browser window listing the marketing entries that you have entered. From the PDF you can of course save, print, etc.

The new report will ave more information added to it such as a summary totals table and maybe some textual explanations of the tables and what their data represents. This initial release is just the first pass on the report process. We will also be

In addition to adding a little more information to the Basic Marketing Report there will be some added options that you can fill out on the Report SetUp tab to be included with the PDF. For example, you will be able to add some 'meta' information on the PDF itself.

So, look for some improvements on the Basic Marketing Report as well as more advanced reports soon!

LAw Office Marketing Tool Reports Update

Hello All,

In the next day or so we will be adding the first law office port. This report is basic in that it will have only the marketing entries displayed. The important thing is to get the process of reporting up and running.

Initially the report will generate a PDF file that reports on the data that has been entered into the marketing tool. Again, the goal on this first report is setting up the Portal for generating reports.

Hope you enjoy the new feature and as always feel free to send us your comments!

Legal Articles Update

All,

We have posted the first legal article written by our staff on leadership. The format used to post feature / new articles on the main page is a common approach we see around the web. Let us know what you think

From the article listing on the main page you may select links to read the article or go to an index page listing current and past articles for that category (Ex. Lawyer Articles, Law Student, Legal Marketing, etc). This page isn't implemented yet but something should be up in the next couple of days.

In addition to staff articles the Law Office Portal will be accepting articles from our users. We haven't quite got that process in place yet, but we should be posting something on that soon.

Thanks,
Mark - LOP Principal Engineer

Legal Articles

All,

Today or tomorrow we will be posting our first legal article on leadership. Over the next couple of days we will also be posting a piece for law students and brand new polls.

We will be posting the articles on the front page of the site. These postings will allow the user to select a link to read the article. There will also be a link to the article category page.

As all law school related material there will be links to all content from the Law Student tab.

You may have also noticed that the site is now using 'boxes' to frame related content. This helps the site look more organized. Of course, the site will change as it ages and as always we welcome your suggestions.

Law Office Software - Marketing Tools Update

The Law Office Portal Marketing tool located at http://www.lawofficeportal.com/law/LawOfficeMarketingTools.jsp
is primarily a reporting tool. It will allow the user to input marketing entries for their legal practice and generate reports based on the collective entry data.

In addition to allowing the user to organize, display, and report on the data, the tool also has a back test feature. This feature of the marketing tool will allow the attorney to change the % spent on a particular category over a designated time period, for example online lead generation, and see what the potential return on that investment would have been.

We're a ways away form having the tool complete. But we're hoping to get another round of development in the next week or so. The goal is to get the report feature working first(we hope to add the ability to generate PDFs as well). Once the reporting feature is complete, next on the list will probably be the back test feature.

I've also been asked about adding the ability to save the marketing entries on the site. We haven't made a decision on that yet. But what will be coming soon will be the ability to import multiple entries from a file on your local machine.

I'll be blogging again on the marketing tool when we have more for our users to play with.

Legal Forums and Porn Bots

All,

As you may have noticed the legal forums have been going through some changes. The issue is that we have been having porn bots coming through and creating accounts. These bots then post unwanted pictures and links on the various forums.

This week we hope to carve out a little time to take some measures to help minimize the access for these bots. We then can open the legal forums back up for business.

Thank you for your patience.
